Day Thanksgiving History

Most religions practice specific thanksgiving customs and prayers following harvests and other times of the year. The English customs that date back to the Protestant Reformation are the foundation of the Thanksgiving holiday's history in North America. Though the harvest in New England happens long in advance of the late November date on which the present Thanksgiving holiday is observed, it nevertheless has elements of a harvest feast.

Days of Thanksgiving and special Thanksgiving religious services gained significance in English custom during Henry VIII's English Reformation. Before the year 1536, there were fifty-two Sundays and ninety-five religious holidays on which individuals had to skip work in order to attend church. The Puritan party in the Anglican Church sought to abolish all church holidays except for the weekly Lord's Day, including the evangelical feasts of Christmas and Easter, even though the Church of England's 1536 reforms reduced the number of holidays in the liturgical calendar to 27 (cf. Puritan Sabbatarianism). The Puritans believed that some occurrences were acts of special providence, thus they decided to replace the festivals with Days of Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving. Days of Fasting were required in response to unforeseen catastrophes or threats of divine judgment.

Christian churches and other groups commemorated Days of Thanksgiving as a way to express gratitude for special benefits that were believed to be bestowed by God. Days of Thanksgiving, for instance, were observed in the wake of Queen Anne's rescue in 1605 and the triumph against the Spanish Armada in 1588. Following the collapse of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605, a unique yearly Day of Thanksgiving was established in 1606, which later evolved into Guy Fawkes Day on November 5. Days of Fasting were instituted in response to the 1613 floods, the 1611 drought, and the 1604 and 1622 plagues. The English settlers' charter, which was issued upon their safe arrival in America in 1619 in Berkeley Hundred in Virginia, stipulated the annual Thanksgiving prayers.

Some historians claim that Martin Frobisher's 1578 expedition from England in quest of the Northwest Passage is when Thanksgiving was first observed in North America. However, according to some academics, "there is no compelling narrative of the origins of the Canadian Thanksgiving day."

Some others also link the origins of Canadian Thanksgiving to the French inhabitants of New France in the seventeenth century, who celebrated their bountiful harvests. At the conclusion of the harvest season, the French settlers in the region usually hosted feasts. They persisted all winter long, even exchanging food with the local aboriginal population.

Some others also believe that the French settlers of New France in the seventeenth century, who celebrated their abundant harvests, are the source of Canadian Thanksgiving. The French colonists in the area typically threw feasts to celebrate the end of the harvest season. They persevered through the whole winter, even trading food with the native Aboriginal community.
